Ollerton’s original conception came from a desire to give creators with autism a space to express themselves, to feel less alone, and to talk about a topic rarely covered in comics. It’s not that Autistics don’t have brains, or that they are ‘just like you’ only not quite as good, they have amazing brains like all humans, but their brains are wired entirely differently.

In fact, many people with autism use comics as an output to express ourselves, to relieve stress or simply to have fun.

Sensory: Life on the Spectrum contains illustrated explorations of everything from life pre-diagnosis to tips on how to explain autism to someone who doesn’t have it, to suggestions for how to soothe yourself when you’re feeling overstimulated. I am looking for this piece in arabic, as I am working with an arabic family and they don’t speak english or danish (we are from Denmark, and I have found this piece in danish 🙂 ).There is a dearth of literature by and for autistic people, and this fills a gap in a refreshing and much needed manner. The perfect proof that comics can educate autistic people, inspire autistic people and be created by autistic people, Face Value comics not only depict everything which I have previously discussed today, but at only 5 years old, this incredible company shows that when it comes to the representation of autism within comics, we are only just getting started. There are times – more times than I care to think – when I completely collapse in to what would be considered ‘low functioning’: noisy environments, if I am touched without warning, if I’m in a difficult situation, or if emotions are running high. Often they will open up and engage with the world a lot more when it is in the form of a character they like and recognise, and will relate things to the context of the story where that character’s from.

It's so great to have a book like this to read and learn more about your diagnosis and feel so much more relief as you find out how common some of the things you do that were previously seen as "weird". With around 40 creators involved approaches in both style, theme and content are unsurprisingly multitudinous.
