As ever, the level of historical research is astounding and the pace is frenetic. The ending had me gasping and the twenty-second book cannot come soon enough! Storytelling is as ever of a superb quality, its a fast-paced Roman adventure in Britannia, and where all characters come vividly to life to capture the reader from start to finish.There is a desperation as the Roman Army have to crush all in their wake. Some underestimated and some not so much. If you enjoy history and the thriller genre this should definitely be on your list to read. Later on in the series, (Centurion) we get to see Cato fall in love again, this time with the daughter of a senator called Julia. Julia and her father had been trapped in a citadel but they survived. She promises Cato that she will get married to him at the end of “Centurion”. Macro and Cato each face deadly battles against enemies who would rather die than succumb to Roman rule. The future of Britannia hangs in the balance. Despite Death to the Emperor being the first book I’ve read in the series, I never felt at a loss. The author provides sufficient detail about previous events to help make sense of things but not too much that you feel you’ve learned everything there is to know. Although this is my first introduction to Centurion Macro and Prefect Cato, I loved their partnership borne of mutual respect and a soldierly comradeship forged in the heat of battle. For much of the book, though, they find themselves apart, each wishing they had the other beside them for support and advice, and because of their complementary skills.

Cato is the son of an Imperial Freedman (former slave) in direct service of Emperor Claudius. Being born a slave himself, and the property of the state, he was given an opportunity by the Emperor as a favour to Cato's late father to enlist in the legions and be given his freedom. Cato has lived a relatively luxurious life as a slave within the Imperial palace, in comparison to the rank and file of the legions, and after accepting the Emperor's offer. he joins the Second Augustan as Macro's Optio.

Centurion is a historical fiction novel ( ISBN 0755327764) written by Simon Scarrow, published by Headline Book Publishing in 2007. It is book 8 in the Eagles of the Empire series, continuing Macro and Cato's adventures in the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire that began in The Eagle in the Sand. Eagles of the Empire is a series of historical military fiction novels written by Simon Scarrow. The series began in July 2000 with the publication of Under the Eagle, and as of March 2022 there have been 21 novels released in the series, with the 22nd novel due in November 2023. [1] Like all in this series, there is a fair amount of action and derring-do and although Macro (and Cato) find themselves in unfamiliar circumstances, in most respects this is familiar territory - a dangerous situation, overwhelming odds, lots of action and a high body count.

The following four books are set in Britain, between the years AD 42 and 44 - detailing the Roman subjugation of the province alongside court intrigue that often leaves the protagonists in receipt of contempt from the Roman political class. In the first book of the series,” Under the Eagle,” Cato and Macro are ranked as Optio and Centurion respectively in the Roman army. Emperor Claudius is on a conquest to capture Britain and has sent his forces to war. Some of the senior officers sent to this mission include Vitellius and Vespasian. At the battle front, Macro and Cato start witnessing strange happenings in their camp such as secret missions, betrayals and ambushes. Vitellius, a senior officer who has bad blood with Macro is the cause of all these strange happenings in the camp as he is not at the battle front to fight for Rome, but for his own selfish interests. Vitellius is planning to steal Caesar’s pay chest, that contains a good size of valuable gold. Macro and Cato’s army skills and survival tactics are put to test as they try to survive at the battle front and win not only the battle for Britain but also internal battles in their own camp. Macro has been close friends with Cato since Cato saved his life in the first book. This bond deepens when Macro confesses that he is illiterate and asks Cato's help in learning to read, and so maintain his position as an officer.Sardinia has long been plagued by tribes of bandits living wild in the centre of the island. These proud decedents of the original inhabitants of Sardinia have been causing problems in recent months, raiding the local villages and ambushes caravans. Taking command of Sardinia’s entire garrison, Cato begins to work out a strategy to defeat the locals and regain his position in Rome. However, this proves harder than originally anticipated as Cato needs to contend with a disorganised military force, a dangerous plague that is beginning to overwhelm the island and a surprisingly competent group of bandits with unparalleled knowledge of the local landscape.
